THE FACTS

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in 5 women in America will have an attempted or completed rape, and 1 in 3 of those will have the first incidence occurring between ages 11-17. 90% of the above assaults will be from an intimate partner or acquaintance. Sexual assault and trafficking are just a portion what occurs in domestic violence situations. According to the National Domestic Violence hotline there are approximately 20,000 calls a day. The United States ranked 129th on the 2022 Global Peace Index based on 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators. The most peaceful country was Iceland.

Empowerment-based self defense programs reduce violence by 50%. According to the U.S. Department of Justice: -Every 9 seconds a women is beaten. -Every 5 minutes a women is raped. - every 2-5 minutes a women is sexually assaulted. -every 6 hours a women is murdered by her partner.

EFFECTS ON SURVIVORS

According to RAINN: The effects of child sexual abuse can be long-lasting and affect the victims mental health. Victims are more likely than non-victims to experience the following mental health challenges: -About 4 times more likely to develop symptoms of drug abuse -About 4 times more likely to experience PTSD as an adult -About 3 times more likely to experience a major depressive episode as an adult Effects on survivors according to RAINN: - Self-Harm - Sexually Transmitted Infections: - Substance Abuse -Dissociation -Panic Attacks -Eating Disorders -Sleep Disorders -Suicide Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse: Many perpetrators of sexual abuse are in a position of trust or responsible for the child’s care, such as a family member, teacher, clergy member, coach, or other children such as older siblings.
